Elpress and Electricon
Pioneering the Viking Link – The green Electricity Motorway.
Electricon A/S, a Danish leader in electrical infrastructure, is playing a pivotal role
in the Viking Link project, set to become the world’s longest high-voltage direct
current (HVDC) electricity link.
This monumental 770-kilometre link, stretching from Denmark to the UK, is a cornerstone in the green electricity transition, facilitating the import and export of renewable energy. In this groundbreaking venture, Energinet, Denmark’s national transmission system operator, collaborates with the UK’s National Grid and Electricon, who partners with Elpress A/S. Electricon’s task is monumental, involving the fabrication of comprehensive interior and exterior earthing systems, including depth electrodes, system gates for earths and foundations, and internal potential equalisation, complemented by extensive lightning protection for substations.
Nicklas Gorecki, Electricon’s seasoned Project Manager, notes,
“In my seven years in the industry, the scale of earthing systems and internal equalisers in Viking Link is unparalleled.”
The project, requiring a dedicated crew of five to ten people, has already spanned a year, with another six months anticipated. Meeting Energinet’s stringent requirements for a high-voltage system with robust potential equalisation and earthing systems has been a formidable challenge.
Unwavering Commitment to Timely Delivery
Electricon relies on Elpress for essential components, using approximately 10,000 C-sleeves and cable lugs in various sizes, alongside extensive copper cabling and rails. These components are procured from Elpress via Lemvigh-Müller. Despite global supply chain challenges, Electricon has experienced no delays, with Elpress consistently meeting delivery timelines. The reliability and performance of Elpress tools have ensured minimal operational issues, with any encountered swiftly resolved.
Electricon: A Specialist in Earthing and Lightning Protection
As one of only three specialist firms in Denmark offering comprehensive earthing systems, lightning protection, and overvoltage protection, Electricon stands out. The company, with around 30 employees in Copenhagen and Ikast, extends its expertise beyond technical services to include consultancy, audit, and maintenance. Training and quality assurance are internally managed, catering to the lack of formal qualifications in Denmark for earthing and lightning protection specialists. Electricon’s team, comprising trained electricians and other skilled professionals, receives extensive training to tackle demanding and bespoke tasks.
Viking Link: A Beacon for Green Transition
The Viking Link project, a significant Electricon client, is a testament to the company’s expertise and commitment to green energy. With substations, 76 kilometres of onshore cable, and 625 kilometres of offshore cable across the North Sea bed, this project is a significant step in the green transition.
